Who is Clayton Carrick-Leslie - and what is his show about?
CLAYTON CARRICK-LESLIE presents, in association with The Classic:
Up and comer goes solo.
2007 NZ Comedy Guild Best Newcomer nominee, Clayton Carrick-Leslie, returns to the Festival in 2009 with his debut solo show, My World.
Last year, Carrick-Leslie's NZCF collaborative stand-up performance Thrice Pudding sold out the 160 seater Transmission Room for the majority of its run. This year, he's by himself in the more intimate 60 seater Classic Studio. And pleased about it, "my style's becoming more about subtlety - the studio lets me whisper to the audience, rather than belt punch lines to the back of the room."
The year gone by has been a busy one for Carrick-Leslie, recurrently featuring in Pro showcases at the Classic in Auckland, as well a September debut in London at The Gallery in West Hampstead.
My World is not a typical stand-up show in that it frequently bursts into the theatrical and musical. This year, impressions and characterisations get more airtime, as do musical divergences including a poem and a rap. The style-shift is for a reason - Carrick-Leslie travelled to Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August of last year and was surprised at the influence it had on him, "Edinburgh shattered my preconceptions of stand-up comedy. I thought I had to leave behind all of my teenage interests of acting, singing, dancing, and tinkering on the piano to pursue comedy. The Fringe taught me that I can do anything I want." Expect to see a performance this year, not just a show.
And the name? "Write about what you know" says Carrick-Leslie, "my world is ridiculous. I need more than an hour to explain it to everybody".
As we've come to expect from this comedian, My World favours the subtle and the cerebral. Bring you mum to this one.
