Programme Six

Screening Saturday October 16

1. Elvis Costello - Monkey To Man
(from "The Delivery Man") (CD) (Universal)

Elvis Costello has two new discs this month - but the other one is a ballet recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra and it's a bit outside our sphere of expertise.

"The Delivery Man" is more like the Costello of old if you've got a bit lost trying to keep up with the his crooning, string quartets and Burt Bacharach. The duet with Lucinda Williams ("There's A Story In Your Voice") is great and Emmylou Harris also puts in an appearance ("The Scarlet Tide").

"Monkey to Man" was recorded at Delta Recording in Clarksdale, Mississippi. According to his website - "It's an answer song, only 50 years late, to Dave Bartholomew's `The Monkey." It's a rock 'n' roll song about a monkey sitting in a cage saying `Well look, this is the supposedly superior being" when you see everything that man's achieved and squandered."

Chapter and verse on "The Delivery Man" can be found at

2. Evermore - It's Too Late
(from "Dreams") (CD) (Warner Music)

Evermore mightn't come from one of New Zealand's rock'n'roll capitals but they've charted a very sure course over the last five years culminating in the release of a very accomplished debut album this month. Brothers Dann, Peter and Jon Hume won the secondary schools Rockquest in 2000 and were the standout act at the World Series held to showcase New Zealand acts for the international music industry in November 2002. They've since relocated to Sydney where they're picking up extensive radio airplay on the Triple J stations.

Their music was used in the Silo Theatre Production, "Boney" and last year they completed a monthly winter residency at Raglan's legendary Aqua Velvet Ballroom. This year they have organised a series of highly successful gigs at The Dog's Bollix featuring local original country music under the show name "When Country Came To Town".
