Five Japanese schoolgirls visiting New Zealand have been diagnosed with swine flu.

They were among a group of 213 from Yokohama Jogakuin Girls' School taking part in activities with Christchurch's Avonside Girls' High School and Rangi Ruru Girls' School this week.

About 35 girls have mild flu-like symptoms, Canterbury medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey has told The Press.

All the pupils have been prescribed Tamiflu and those with symptoms will remain in isolation for 72 hours, Humphrey says.

The group leaves on Tuesday.
