Fifty Japanese schoolgirls who've been in isolation with swine flu will be heading to Auckland on Monday.

They're part of a group of more than 200, on a trip organised by Rangi Ruru and Avonside Girls' high schools.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Alistair Humphrey says the students were put into a 72-hour isolation, after five tested positive for the disease.

He says at least 30 showed flu-like symptoms, and the others have all had some degree of symptoms.

Humphrey says the schools are being careful about exposing others to swine flu, so they're keeping the isolated students in Christchurch.

He says the pupils are all being treated with Tamiflu.

The other 160 girls on the trip have carried on north to Hamilton and any child who develops symptoms will be isolated.
