A claim by Belgian scientists that silver particles may hold the key to finding a cure for the common cold is no surprise to several New Zealand firms.
The scientists have produced and sold silver based cold treatments for years.
From the start of a person's life the common cold is one of life's constants and from her small Dunedin laboratory Michelle Facer-Wood produces what she says is an effective treatment.
Silver rods are suspended in purified water and Facer-Wood says when an electrified charge goes through them the silver comes out in very fine particles and is suspended in water.
The Belgian cold breakthrough announced this week is similar.
Harmless bacteria like that found in probiotic yogurts is grown in a solution of silver ions. The bacteria dies but continues to excrete tiny particles of silver. The solution can then be added to nasal sprays and hand washes where the silver attacks the virus, killing it before it infects human cells.
The Dunedin company is among several in New Zealand already selling colloidal silver products.
"Once you actually try it for something as simple as earache or conjunctivitis or a throat infection you realise just how incredibly effective it is," Facer-Wood said.
The Belgian product has already treated a vomiting bug successfully.
"We're into nano technology and I think this technology does have the edge on what's come before," Australian medical commentator Rick Gordon said.
The local natural health industry welcomes the scientific research that will follow the Belgian advance.
