People who have a heart condition are being urged to stop taking the weight loss medication, Reductil, immediately.

The drug has been taken off shelves in Europe after authorities there found it increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke, in people with heart disease.

The medicines safety authority Medsafe says people with a heart condition should come off Reductil immediately, while a review is carried out.

Medsafe spokesman Stewart Jessamine says people who are worried should talk to their GP.

The review is expected to take just over a month.
