Whangarei Hospital is dealing with a suspected norovirus outbreak.

Around ten patients and several staff have been affected by vomiting and diarrhoea and Ward 16 is closed to new medical admissions.

Visitors are being asked to wear protective clothing.

Northland District Health Board is urging members of the public with viral gastroenteritis-like symptoms not to visit patients.

The most usual ways of catching the illness are through contact with infected people, eating contaminated food or drinking untreated water.
