Diagnostic Medlab is refusing to comment on reports it is about to be rehired to carry out some community lab services in Auckland.
There has been widespread criticism and ongoing problems with services provided by newcomer Labtests after Diagnostic Medlab lost the eight year contract in a competitive tender.
ONE News health reporter Lorelei Mason says it is the latest twist in the sorry saga of laboratory testing for Auckland which has seen outrage in some quarters over the level of service Labtests has been providing. The ongoing issues have seen the chief executive of Labtests being removed from his job and a media blackout to give Labtests time to sort out the problems.
Mason understands nothing has been signed at this stage but she says the rumours that the district health boards have offered some of the contract back to Diagnostic Medlab indicate they still have lingering concerns.
If the reports are accurate it could be a good result for Auckland which has had to deal with a myriad of problems caused by having a single provider.
Mason says the offer is believed to be a small part of the $70 million a year contract over eight years but she says all the parties involved are keeping tightlipped.
Labtests chief executive Arthur Morris has hinted there could be further word on the issue early next week while Auckland DHBs have refused to comment.
