Doctors are taking an innovative approach in a bid to gain a better insight into diabetes.
In a joint venture by Auckland and Otago Universities, 32 newly diagnosed diabetic patients are being given video cameras.
They will be filming all of their medical appointments and discussions with family about the illness for the first six months of coping with it.
Dr Tim Kenealy says they suspect one part of improving diabetes control is helping doctors, nurses and patients communicate more clearly to each other.
The footage will be analysed for both verbal and non verbal communication - in a hope of finding areas of improvement.
