Parents are being warned to immunise children as a measles epidemic threatens Auckland schools.

Diocesan School for Girls in Epsom and Vauxhall Primary School in Devonport have each reported one case of measles.

Letters have been sent home to parents and caregivers, while the students and those who have been in contact with them have been asked to stay away from school.

Measles spreads easily through the air, via coughing and sneezing and can lead to pneumonia and other complications which can be fatal.

The first symptoms to look out for are a fever, runny nose, cough and sore red eyes followed by a red rash that spreads over the body.
