Awareness for HIV is growing in New Zealand following a high profile court case.

Forty-year old Auckland man Glen Mills has been charged with intentionally infecting people with the HIV virus.

Spokeswoman for the New Zealand Aids Foundation, Dawn O'Connor, says the attention the case has received has led to a record number of people getting tests.

She says it's not just those who have been in contact with Mills that have made enquiries.

O'Connor says they've been busy all around the country since Friday day last week and expect that to continue for some time.

She says the awareness following the court case can only be a good thing if it breaks down stigma and discrimination surround HIV and Aids.

New Zealand Aids Foundation spokeswoman Dawn O'Connor says while New Zealand doesn't have as many cases as other countries - numbers are rising.

She says last year there were a total of 184 new diagnoses of HIV.
