The Government has announced it will spend $5 million on cutting Auckland's cardiac surgery waiting list.
Health Minister Tony Ryall says in an Auckland DHB audit in May, 141 patients were identified as waiting longer than was clinically appropriate.
He says while the number has since been reduced to 99, the Government is allocating extra funds to make sure operations are carried out as quickly as possible.
Ryall says the 99 patients awaiting heart operations have been notified their surgery will be carried out by the end of October.
He says rather than sit back and let a situation develop similar to the one at Wellington Hospital last year, the Government is taking action.
