Health authorities are expecting the flu season to arrive earlier than usual this year.
Swine flu is also picked to make a return as the most predominant strain.
Immunisation Advisory Centre director Dr Nikki Turner says people need to start thinking about protecting themselves, as the flu could arrive as early as the end of this month.
She says the 2010 vaccine also protects against swine flu, so anyone who is ready should get it from their GP now.
She says the pattern in other countries is that flu is arriving in autumn, rather than winter, so people need to get in early with their vaccine.
Turner says people also need to remember the usual advice - stay home if they are unwell, and to cover their mouths if they cough or sneeze.
