Large numbers of absentees are creating headaches for Wellington schools.

Secondary schools in Porirua and the Hutt Valley say up to 45% of students have been off sick with H1N1 "swine" flu and other illnesses this week.

Hutt Valley High School principal Ross Sinclair says around 30% of their students have been away over the past few days and staff have also been hit by the virus.

He says in many cases parents are being cautious and keeping their children at home if they show any symptoms.

He says the virus has a rapid rate of spread so they are urging people to be even more vigilant than usual.

Meanwhile, the condition of a woman with swine flu who is in the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital is slowly improving.

A hospital spokesman says she is now in a critical but stable condition.

The 30-year-old was admitted to the hospital with the virus a week ago.
