A team of experts from the Auckland District Health Board has moved in at the region's troubled new medical testing company, Labtests.

The Auckland DHB announced an intervention for the new provider who has been operating in Auckland since early August, after a number of teething difficulties reported by GPs and patients.

The audit team of six health officials will handle quality and safety issues at Labtests and the Auckland District Health Board predicts big changes are on the way.

"There's been significant anxiety about simply being able to get through to the right people at the right time, so all of that will be fixed and some of it has already been fixed," says Pat Snedden, Auckland DHB.

Complaints include long wait times at blood collection centres, delays in house calls, and incorrect labelling of blood.

The Medical Association says that is not good enough.

"There needs to be the degree of supervision that should have been there in the first place&so that the people of Auckland, the patients the doctors and nurses won't have to go through the frustrating time they have over the past few weeks," says Dr Peter Foley, Medical Association.

Labtests is being told to pick up its game, or risk being in breach of its $70 million a year contract.

The Auckland DHB says the new provider is taking the situation very seriously.

Results of the audit are expected as early as Friday.
