New Zealand and Australian authorities are investigating concerns about the popular ulcer treatment Bonjela.

This follows a warning by British authorities that it could increase the risk of a rare but potentially fatal brain and liver disease in children.

Britain's medicines watchdog has issued the precautionary warning to parents not to give Bonjela preparations containing salicylate salts to children under the age of 16-years because of a theoretical risk of Reye's Syndrome.

Bonjela teething gel is not affected.

The Ministry of Health reiterates that no medicines are 100% safe and instructions should be followed.

It will release its own guidelines early next week.
