A new national study on obesity shows New Zealanders blame parents for the increase of the problem in children.

The findings show three-quarters of people think parents are to blame for overweight children.

Research Director Paul Epplett says the recession is also copping some of the blame.

He says parents are finding it cheaper and easier to feed their children fast food instead of healthy, home-cooked meals.

Paul Epplett says daily stress is also a factor, meaning parents don't have time time to ensure their children go to sports and leisure activities.
