GPs want more involvement in maternity care.

Royal College of General Practitioners president Jonathan Fox is proposing maternity services to be integrated into the Primary Health Organisation structure.

He says it is to ensure that when an expectant mother has other medical problems, the medical team is already in place.

It follows the latest report by the Perinatal and Maternity Review Committee recommending lead maternity carers screen expectant mothers for things like diabetes and family violence.

Fox says international experience shows the more comprehensive services that are available in the primary care system, the better the outcome for mother and child.
