The Safe Food Campaign is warning many fruit and vegetables and other food products in New Zealand contain pesticide residues that could be dangerous.
It says celery is top of the list, but many others also have pesticide in or on them.
Researcher Alison White says the Food Safety Authority attempts to reassure people that because the pesticide levels on some foods are below a certain level, then they are assumed to be safe.
But the Safe Food Campaign says there are some serious long-term effects associated with particular pesticides and a fresh approach is needed to food safety in New Zealand.
