Seventy cough and cold remedies may soon be banned from supermarkets and dairies.
Medsafe wants the common medicines to be restricted for sale because of possible harm to children under six years of age.
The Ministry of Health is poised to make a decision on the proposal.
Food and Grocery Council chief executive Katherine Rich says it would mean that New Zealanders pay up to 45% more for the same products in pharmacies.
She says Medsafe has come up with no evidence that there is a problem that needs to be fixed.
Rich trusts that common sense and due process will prevail when the Ministry's Medicines Classification Committee meets next month.
