The parents of a little girl born in Auckland from an embryo frozen for nearly 16 years want more couples to be able to receive donated eggs.

The infant came from one of thousands of fertilised eggs stored in New Zealand. The donors say turning more eggs into healthy living children just takes a change in attitudes.

Nicola and Darryn had been trying everything for nine years before their application for embryo donation was accepted.

They heard Christie and Peter had chosen them.

"We felt like we were playing god. We had to choose someone. If we had the choice we would have liked to give everyone one," says Christie.

The couple already had an adopted son and another from IVF, but refused to destroy 12 remaining fertilised eggs. Their eggs were stored at nearly 200 degrees below freezing. There has only been one other child born after being frozen for so long.

"Science has proven and in theory these embryos can be kept for a very long time and as time goes on we'll be able to prove that," says Peter.

Peter says if the law changed the couple would be able to donate to more couples. Anyone in their position can make one donation under the law.

"There are thousands of eggs in New Zealand, no-one knows what to do," says Peter.

Attitudes to donation are the reason they do not want their identity known but they all hope that changes.

Meanwhile new mum and dad, Nicola and Darryn, are more than happy to show the world a happy healthy baby girl.
