As of today all West Aucklanders have access to 24/7 emergency hospital facilities as Waitakere Hospital will be open around the clock for adults.
The change follows the hospital introducing 24/7 emergency care for children last year.
Waitemata District Health Board chairman Dr Lester Levy says $1.8 million has been spent making improvements to hospital facilities.
He said although there are services at Auckland and North Shore
hospitals, for West Aucklanders it is a long way to travel.
"We recognise that people in west Auckland have waited long and
patiently for this, and through the hard work, dedication and
perseverance of our staff, the service is now a reality," Levy said
in a statement.
Despite the change the DHB is urging people to go to their GP
unless they have a serious medical problem.
