Derek finds Meredith in Joe's bar knitting. She says it is because she is celibate now. In Denny's room, Izzie is knitting too, she also taken a vow of celibacy. She complains to Denny about George not talking to her even though she's his best friend. Meanwhile, George and Dr. Torrez are playing a game with Cristina and Burke. Cristina is furious when they lose because of Burke.
At work, Cristina is still upset about losing to George. She still wants him out of the apartment and knows she has to make Burke think it's his idea. During surgery Alex makes a nasty comment about the patient's chances of survival. Burke reprimands him.
Derek tells Addison that the dog is sick and is at the vet. Cristina and Richard find themselves in the same medical seminar. George and Addison deal with pregnant patient, Molly, and her mother. Outside her room George notices Thatcher, Meredith's father. He asks after Meredith before going into Molly's room - she is his daughter.
Derek is looking for an intern, Miranda volunteers because Richard hasn't given her any surgeries to perform. She thinks it's because she just had a baby. Izzie and Meredith talk about Dr. Torrez who overhears.
Alex talks to Ms Carver who is going to die of cancer. Burke says there is nothing else they can do. Her teenage daughter comes in complaining. Her mother hasn't told her she has cancer. Cristina beats Richard in an exercise in the seminar. Izzie and Torrez aren't getting on. George tells Izzie about Meredith having a sister.
Derek is performing brain surgery on Andrew, a young boy who has to be awake during the operation. Miranda is at his side to keep him talking. It turns out that he's a spelling bee champ so she gets him to spell words for him.
Addison tells George off for not concentrating on Molly's case. He explains about Molly being Meredith's sister so she lets him off. Ms Carver wants to leave the hospital. Burke tries to calm her but it doesn't work. Alex is blunt and it calms her down. Burke tells him never to take a tone like that with a patient again.
At lunch Cristina, George and Izzie talk about Meredith's other family. Richard joins them. He jokes about Cristina beating him all day but notes that speed isn't always the best thing. They all sit quietly until he's so uncomfortable that he leaves. Meredith sits down so George leaves. Meredith says that she thought she just saw her father. Cristina asks if she met her sister too.
Miranda and Derek are still asking Andrew to spell words. Suddenly Andrew's speech goes funny. Derek does something in his brain and he can speak again. Miranda starts to tear up and blames it on her hormones.
Cristina and Richard face off again on another assignment. Addison introduces Meredith to Molly but doesn't say her last name. Meredith fishes for information. Molly is 22 and married. She speaks warmly of her father and has an older sister at Harvard Medical School. Meredith runs into Torrez's room and starts smashing a cast to vent. Izzie tries to talk to Torrez about George but she tells them off for not seeing him.
Richard does his task with his eyes closed and beats Cristina; he's not subtle in victory. Alex is with Ms Carver whose daughter is angry about missing her birthday. Ms Carver promises they'll have a great birthday next year. Later, Alex tells her that she is going to die soon so shouldn't be lying to her daughter, who will probably hate her for the rest of her life. Burke sees this and goes to yell at Alex, but Alex tells him that he doesn't lie to patients like the rest of them.
Molly's mother recognises Meredith and tells her that Molly knows that Thatcher had another daughter. She says Thatcher thinks about her a lot but her mother broke him. Thatcher talks to Richard saying he spent years waiting for his wife to get out of surgery. Richard tells him about Alice's condition and says how it's hard on Meredith. Thatcher says that he has no right to talk to him about Alice.
Miranda checks on Andrew who doesn't remember her, she says that she has a son too. Meredith runs past George and hides. Thatcher isn't far behind. He tells George how Meredith went to see him recently but he didn't know what to say. When Thatcher compares her to Alice's cold demeanour, George defends Meredith saying she is an excellent surgeon and a kind person. Overhearing all this, Meredith says thank you to George but he ignores her.
Derek and Meredith watch over Molly's surgery. She is still knitting. Ms Carver talks to her daughter and starts giving her advice about life. The daughter asks why she's telling her all this and her mother admits that she is not going to get better. Her daughter cries and they hug. Alex watches on.
Thatcher checks on a recovering Molly. Izzie has made Denny a sweater. Cristina stops Richard in the hall; he congratulates her on her work in the seminar. She asks how he wasn't even looking during the task. He says that if she wants to win, she needs to go back to the basics.
At home, George and Burke play chess. Cristina walks in naked. George covers his eyes and Burke tells him to get out. George goes to the hospital and calls Torrez; he hears her phone ring down the hall. She is living in the basement of the hospital. He asks her to cut his hair and as she does, they kiss.
Meredith is knitting in the vet's waiting room. The handsome vet, Finn, comes in with the dog. He introduces himself, Meredith smiles then frantically goes back to her knitting.
