S2 Ep 13: Begin The Beguine (Recap)

It's a new year. Izzie and George have breakfast in the bathroom
to hide from the dog who only seems to like Meredith. When Derek
brings home a trout for breakfast Addison flips out and says
she hates the trailer. Richard visits Alice Grey who still thinks
they are interns having an affair. And Burke asks Cristina whether
she will move in with him. He also asks what she was
planning to do about the baby. She doesn't answer.
Richard tells the interns that this year they will enforce the rules and not allow them to exceed 80 hours per week. Izzie tells Alex she is no longer upset about what he did to her. Burke gives Cristina the cold shoulder in surgery. Richard enters and says they have a heart for his patient, Danny. They need to go to Idaho to get the heart. Richard makes Cristina leave as she has exceeded her 80 hours.
Miranda and the interns check on Danny who hits on Izzie. George and Addison meet Bex a 14 year old girl who needs a tumour removed. George sees self-inflicted scars on her wrist. Alex's patient, an author, has eaten his novel because he hates it.
George notices Bex has strange hormone levels. Richard asks Derek for a favour. Bex admits to George she takes a contraceptive pill to help her develop like other girls. She says she doesn't feel normal. Meredith is in the lift with Derek, he flirts with her until Addison enters. She says she is upset about the trailer not that he said he loved Meredith.
Alex's patient goes into surgery but is rambling, sweating and trembling. Cristina convinces Miranda to let her get the heart with her in Idaho. Addison gives Bex an ultrasound and leaves George to finish up. She tells him she feels like a freak, he admits he was a geek at school. Izzie flirts with Danny who flirts back. Meanwhile, having been sent home, Meredith does laundry. Addison sees from the biopsy that Bex is an hermaphrodite.
Cristina and Miranda are on a jet to Idaho. Bex's parents are told that internally she has female and male sex organs. The psychologist says that she may start to identify strongly with one sex and she has a choice to make. Her parents are insistent that she will still be a girl.
Alex's patient goes to surgery with Richard. Izzie and Danny discuss his new heart. Bex's parents ask Addison to just make her a girl whilst out taking the tumour. George is outraged and Addison refuses to operate on Bex without her knowing.
Meredith goes to visit her mother. Derek is there and says her mother is a prime candidate for an experimental programme that could help her. She yells at him. Miranda is in surgery in Idaho and talks to Burke on the phone. George and Meredith watch Alex's surgery. She is bored with all her free time. Richard removes the novel from the authors stomach.
Bex knows something is wrong and George asks if he is supposed to lie to her. It forces her parents to tell her the truth. Bex asks if this means she could be a boy, and smiles. Outside her parents yell at George. Alex's patient is getting worse post-op. Derek tells Richard that he thinks he can get her into the clinical trial but it needs Meredith's power of attorney. Alex thinks the author got mercury poisoning from eating the novel.
Miranda makes Cristina call Burke to tell him that there is some damage to the heart. Richard tells Meredith the programme Derek looked into was a favour to him and it could help her mother. Alex has correctly diagnosed his patient and treats him. Back on the jet, Cristina and Miranda discuss how she thought about not keeping the baby because of her career but she knew she could do it.
Izzie tells Danny that he didn't get the heart. Bex thanks George for making her parents tell her. She asks if she can be a boy if she wants. Meredith asks Derek to tell her more about the programme. Izzie says goodbye to Danny.
George cuts Bex's hair. Her parents walk in, her mother picks up the scissors and cuts it for her. Derek cooks a trout outside to appease Addison. She admits that she is passive aggressive. He says that she is just supposed to wait until his thing with Meredith passes. She still hates the trailer. Cristina tells Burke that she wasn't going to have the baby, he's not mad, he just wanted to know. George and Izzie eat dinner in the bathroom and when the finally dog turns on her, Meredith joins them.
