S1 Ep 7: The Self Destruct Button (Recap)
Screens Wednesday August 24 at 8.30pm
Derek and Meredith try to be discreet as they spend the night together at Meredith's house, but George and Izzie spot Derek as he tries to sneak out in the morning.
They are both rattled by this discovery. Is he using her? Is she sleeping with him to help her career? Is it just that he's really hot?!
During their shift Izzie is snarky towards Meredith. She discovers that Christina already knew about the relationship, and to her surprise Cristina is cool with it, believing that Meredith is good at what she does and deserves the surgery opportunities she's been given.
But Izzie isn't convinced and finally has it out with Meredith.
Is it the hot sex or the surgery prizes that has her sleeping with
her boss? Meredith tells Izzie that she met Derek before she knew
they'd be working together, and that it isn't about either of those
things. Izzie realises that Meredith has actually fallen for Derek
and feels better about it.
Meanwhile George has spent the day side by side with Derek while
treating a child who needs brain surgery. George is having trouble
hiding his anger at Derek, but Derek treats George with respect and
asks him to scrub in on the surgery.
Things go wrong, however, when George suspects an anaesthesiologist of drinking on the job. He breaks the 'doctor code' and speaks up in the operating room, which prompts Derek to throw George out. But during the surgery the anaesthesiologist falls asleep and fails to notice that the child is waking up, prompting Derek to kick him out and later apologise to George. He tells George that although there is a code amongst doctors that you don't speak up in front of everyone, it was the right thing to do and he's sorry he kicked George out of the surgery. George barely accepts the apology and Derek realises what this is all about - that he was spotted leaving the flat that morning. He assures George that his relationship with Meredith will not affect their internships, and that he will not hurt her.
Elsewhere in the hospital, Alex has been treating a man who finds honour in self-mutilation. The patient has purposely got himself shot in the shoulder, but the wound has gone right through and nicked his rib. The surgery goes fine but later the patient starts suffering symptoms of a fever, and Alex discovers the man has an infected tattoo. Although the tattoo had only a slight infection in the morning, the stress of the bullet wound has caused it to get terribly infected during the day. The patient gets quickly worse and when his heart stops the doctors are unable to revive him. Alex is visibly shocked by this, especially as the patient was the first person he'd met in the hospital from his home town of Iowa.
Cristina has spent the day seemingly battling a case of the flu and feeling ill when she looks at certain foods. But we see her later in the bathroom with a couple of pregnancy tests.
