Steve Mudgeway
BA (Auckland) Grade 2 Flute (Trinity)
The School Guidance Counselor is in his late 30s. He is good
looking, charming, smarmy, fluent in both psycho-babble and street
talk, and relentlessly duplicitous. He used to wear his long hair
in a pony tail, but still has a Tibetan bag slung over one
shoulder. Insists on everyone calling him 'Steve', he is the
pupil's friend, he is the teacher's friend, he is everyone's
friend. Women fall for Steve and are quickly discarded.
This Lothario has an excellent collection of reggae and acid- jazz
CDs, writes poetry and gives a really good massage. At first pupils
like Steve because he is seemingly so anti-authority, talks about
getting arrested by 'pigs', smoking dope, reminds them to "say yes
to condoms", and they've witnessed him clubbing at 2.00am in the
weekends.
When they get to know this 'pupil's friend' better they discover
he's deeply authoritarian, does not tolerate dissent, is a
tell-tale, and worst of all is a sycophant to all those with power
and authority. Steve hates Gormsby because he knows Gormsby sees
right through him.
