This slim, vivacious and attractive woman in her early 30s has
been at the school five years and clearly remembers the appalling
Mr. Gormsby from last time he was a relieving teacher. When Gormsby
was reappointed she helped lead the push to get him dismissed as
she believed he was 'racist, sexist and totally out of date'.
Over time her attitude to Gormsby softens. She is a good
teacher, especially of remedial reading, and has helped many boys
from 'low socio-economic groups' to read. She adores the works of
Jane Austen and dresses like a character from Emma.
She once thought Steve from Guidance was her 'Mr. Darcy' though it
transpires he is a cad. He suggested they 'cool off' their
relationship just as she discovers he has been having an affair
with the younger Agnes O'Flaherty, so she turns to the handsome
young unsophisticated Maori teacher, Hone Hakanui, who could be her
'Heathcliff'.
