Though Gormsby refers to him fondly as a "fine ebony specimen",
which Mr. Morton confirms, Afioga is a source of little joy for
other teachers. A garrulous and extremely handsome Samoan boy,
Afioga, like Hohepa, is highly intelligent.
Along with Alupepe, he is Hohepa's best friend, and the three form a formidable 'gang'. Afioga's English is appalling, though not bad for someone who only came to New Zealand when he was 11. Afioga is quick to learn, but doesn't often try.
A natural at sport, he can't really be bothered with too much schoolwork, as he's confident of winning a rugby scholarship one day. If any teacher shows him genuine kindness and loyalty, he repays it in spades.
