Inspiring Kiwis: Ray Avery
Air NZ Holidays is extremely proud to bring us this week's Inspiring Kiwi, Ray Avery. In this special interview, Ray, philanthropic scientist, shows us some of the life-saving medical devices he has invented. He talks about his life's work, which has affected the lives of thousands of the world's most vulnerable.
Perhaps one of the most compelling reasons Ray Avery is such an inspiration is because opportunities in life were not handed to him on platter - in fact, he grew up in an orphanage and various foster homes, and developed his interest in science from reading books, which he discovered when seeking warmth in public libraries.
He now mentors young people, speaking regularly at schools and universities. He is a great believer in the talents, entrepreneurial skills and the generosity of New Zealanders and using their skills to make the world a more egalitarian place. Medicine Mondiale works with a huge number of New Zealand professionals who give their time to support Ray's single minded determination. He was recently named New Zealander of the Year, sponsored by Kiwibank.
Watch Ray talking about how he used his work as a research scientist to help thousands in developing countries.
