Inspiring Kiwi: Maria Picken
This week's Air New Zealand Holidays Inspiring Kiwi is a woman who has worked in some of the world's most dangerous spots as a Red Cross nurse. Marion Picken earlier this year received a medal from the Defence Force for her work in Afghanistan, where she worked on and off between 2001 and 2003.
Marion started her field work in Sudan in 1998 where she ran a hospital and worked as a midwife for nearly a year. She went on to Afghanistan, back to the Sudan, Banda Aceh and then Afghanistan again.
Now a part-time nurse in Wellington with two young children, Marion intends to do more aid work in years to come, but for shorter lengths of time.
