How To Make A Poi
Things to gather
Maori themed printed cotton fabric - Spotlight have a huge
range
+ Dacron for filling along with
+ Newspaper
1 roll each of thick red, white and black wool - if too thin, then
double or triple
White plastic bag
Sellotape
Sharp scissors
Bread and butter plate as your template
Pencil/pen
Method
Lay fabric out, then trace around the plate, and then
cut.
Repeat with plastic.
Cut the string to ¾ the length of your arm, then make a knot
at one end.
Take a big double page piece of newspaper and form into a tight
ball.
Take a big piece of Dacron and roll around newspaper ball.
Wrap ends of wool firmly around ball.
Completed ball needs to be about the size of a tennis ball.
Wrap Dacron ball in plastic ring then use sellotape to bind and
make secure.
Plait up wool until you have about 3" of string left. Knot
off.
Cover ball in printed fabric and secure with a piece of wool.
You will need to make two.
