Simple raw dog food
The ratio of this food is:
65 per cent meat
25 per cent vegetables
10 per cent organ meat.
- The muscle meat can be anything; from beef or chicken to
venison.
- It's good practice to regularly change meats you use so your
dog can have a varied diet
- Avoid battery farmed meat - not only is it a cruel practice,
but the antibiotics and growth hormones used to enhance the meats
development will taint your dogs food.
- Organ meat can be heart, liver or kidneys. A combination is
best.
- For vegetables, use home grown or organic where possible as
it will be more nutrient rich.
- I like to use kale, carrots, silver beet and spinach. I
occasionally add blackberries or blueberries as part of the total
weight of vegetables.
Place the ground meat in a large bowl or container for
mixing.
The vegetables should be grated, or blended in a food
processor.
Either finely chop the organ meat or pulse in the food processor.
Combine with the meat and vegetables and mix well, using your
hands. Wear rubber gloves if you like.
Portion into serving sizes using bags or containers and
freeze.
Adult dogs can be fed between 2-3 per cent of their body weight.
Fed over 1-2 meals per day
Make adjustments according to your dog's age and activity.
Puppies can be fed 10 per cent of their body weight in food. Fed
over several smaller sized meals per day.
Some Additives you may consider mixing in your raw dog food
before serving.
Apple cider vinegar - known to reduce
common infections, improve stamina, prevent muscle fatigue after
exercise, increase resistance to disease, and protect against food
poisoning. Cider vinegar is rich in the vitamins, minerals, and
trace elements found in apples, especially potassium; it normalizes
acid levels in the stomach, improves digestion and the assimilation
of nutrients, reduces intestinal gas and fecal odors, helps relieve
constipation, alleviates some of the symptoms of arthritis and
helps prevent bladder stones and urinary tract infections.
Kelp - a rich source of the trace mineral
iodine.
Vitamin C with bioflavonoid - are antioxidants. As
such, they can rid the body of free radicals, toxic byproducts of
chemical reactions that take place in the body every day. The body
is exposed to free radicals through exercise, pollution, smoking,
and many other factors. Free radicals are molecules that are
missing an electron, and without nutrients to absorb them, they
basically run wild in the body, creating all sorts of damage while
searching for another electron to complete them.
Omega rich oils - i.e. fish or flax seed oil. Your
dog's body needs a daily supply of Omega 3 to supply the essential
building blocks for the brain and nervous system. It is also to
Proven to help lower blood pressure, can ease Joint conditions such
as arthritis and aid in maintaining a healthy heart.
Flaxseed meal - a rich source of Omega 3, Vit b,
antioxidants and fibre.
Raw egg - give shell and all as a great wee source
of protein and calcium.
Ground bone meal - an natural of calcium (or
just feed appropriate whole raw bones or chicken necks in addition
to this raw recipe).
