Despite his escalating sex scandal, Tiger Woods has been named the athlete of the decade by the Associated Press.

While the next decade gets off to a bleak start for Woods, the world No.1 received 56 of the 142 votes cast.

More than half the votes were cast after his car accident which set the ball rolling and mistresses clambering to the nearest possible media outlet.

Six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong finished second with 33 votes while tennis ace Roger Federer was third with 25 votes.

Putting his personal indiscretions aside, Woods has revolutionised the game of golf over the last 10 years.

He has won the grand slam three times and taken 12 majors this decade (14 overall).

Woods won an astonishing 56 times on the PGA Tour during the past 10 years.

It remains to be seen whether Woods can break Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 professional golf majors.
