American golfer Sean O'Hair rolled in an eight-foot birdie on the last hole to take one-stroke lead over Colombia's Camilo Villegas after the first round of the Kiwi Challenge at Cape Kidnappers was completed on Thursday morning.

Third was Anthony Kim, who is at even par while fellow-American and defending champion Hunter Mahan signed for a 2-over 73.

The four players were forced to complete the last three holes of the first round on Thursday after high winds halted play on the 16th hole at the Hawke's Bay course.

The final round of the $1 million 36-hole event was to be played on Thursday.

Kiwi Challenge first round scores (US unless noted):

68 - Sean O'Hair
69 - Camilo Villegas (Colombia).
