Leading New Zealand golfer Danny Lee stumbled late and has failed in his bid to qualify for the United States PGA Tour via the qualifying school route.

Lee, last year's US amateur champion, finished a disappointing 36th in the first-stage qualifying tournament in Texas, his seven-over tally five shots more than was required to advance to the second stage.

The 19-year-old was well in contention after carding a three-under 69 in his third round.

And he was two-over the card entering the last eight holes of his final round but shot an excruciating five bogeys to lose touch with the top 22 finishers plus ties who advanced.

It ended a roller-coaster week at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club course at McKinney, with Lee having opened the tournament with an even-par 72 but followed that with a poor 78.

The tournament was won by American Nick Mason on 10-under, two shots clear of compatriot Jacob Rogers.
