He may have felt like Tiger Woods on Thursday but jittery young Korean Min-Kyu Han resembled a struggling David Duval as he crashed out of the PGA Championship lead in spectacular style at Coolum.
Victorian rookie Matt Griffin (67-68) held the halfway lead going to into the weekend on seven under, one better than another Victorian Jason Norris (69-67) who almost died two years ago after crashing a push-bike late at night on the grounds of the Coolum resort.
Norris, who said Coolum "owed him" shared second place with Geoff Ogilvy (70-66) and Stuart Appleby (67-69).
Robert Allenby and Adam Scott (four under) were also poised to strike.
Defending champion Ogilvy made a great par putt save on the last hole after his mishit approach into the 18th green bounced off the roof of the hospitality tent behind the green.
Han's self destruction was tough to watch.
He bravely held his round together with eight straight pars before his swing cracked.
The warning signs were there even in his 62, hitting just 12 greens in regulation, suggesting his shot making could be suspect under pressure.
He had 11 birdies and 21 putts blazing his way to a stunning course record 62 on Thursday after which he said: "Maybe I am like Tiger Woods today".
His scorecard on Friday featured one solitary birdie in his four over 75.
Instead it was Griffin's day to enjoy the spotlight.
Ranked the world's third best junior golfer, the 26 year-old was upbeat about leading such a class field into the weekend action.
"It's pretty exciting," he said after edging to a one shot lead.
"To be in the final groups at a big tournament in Australia probably since I was about five has been my dream so to be able to do that will be a lot of fun.
"I think I will be really nervous tomorrow. I don't know how much sleep I will get tonight.
Allenby, who pocketed $1.3 million for his play-off win at Sun City last weekend, was in a great position to win his fourth PGA.
"It's definitely there, there's no doubt about that," said Allenby when asked if PGA number four was on the cards.
"I think four under is fine.
"I wished I was a couple better, I think six (under) going into the weekend would have been better but all it means is I have to make a lot more birdies over the last 36 holes."
Allenby produced the play of the day, stripping down to his boxers on the third hole to play a shot from the water during his round of 68.
