New Zealand professional James Gill shot a even par 72 in the opening round of stage two of the European Tour qualifying school at Sherry Golf Jerez in Spain on Saturday.

A total of 304 players are competing over 72 holes at four venues - Hacienda Del Alamo, Costa Bellana Club de Golf, Arcos Gardens and Sherry Golf Jerez in southwestern Spain.

Seventy four spots are up for grabs to secure a place in the final qualifying stage over six rounds starting November 28 in Spain.

But the 24-year-old Hamilton player, the only Kiwi left vying for a spot on the European Tour to join Michael Campbell, Mark Brown and Danny Lee with full playing rights, has a lot to do to claim one of the 18 places at Sherry Golf Jerez.

Argentina's Paulo Pintoan leads on eight under par 64 with Gill eight shots back in 42nd equal with England's Peter Richardson the last-placed player on 78.
