Legendary rocker Alice Cooper found golf and then ditched alcohol in a life-changing transformation.

Cooper, who now plays off a three handicap, spoke to ONE News presenter Peter Williams about how golf was instrumental in him giving up his destructive way of life.

"When I moved to Arizona all of sudden I saw these golf courses and I kind of went "ha who would play that'," said Cooper.

"When I had to get sober I needed to find something that was going to take up my time.

"I was a good baseball player so I could put the bat on the ball and had good eye co-ordination and then I picked up a club and had a swing in it (the golf ball) went straight down the middle and I thought this isn't too hard.

"The pro that was there said you're a natural and you've got a natural swing, so from then on I was pretty much addicted.

"And I tell people all the time that if you want to get into golf understand that it's an addiction."

Cooper's rock n' roll career spans more than four decades and he admits that if he had continued his notorious lifestyle it would have spelt an early grave.

"It's (golf) has been a component in saving my life," he said.

"I always tell people and then correct them when they say I was a cured alcoholic and then I say 'no, I was a healed alcoholic'."
