A resilient New Zealand weathered a thunderstorm to snatch a 1-1
draw with Burkina Faso in their second match at the under-17 World
Cup tournament in Nigeria.
The match was halted in the 64th minute because of a torrential
downpour but play resumed at Enugu's Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium after a
delay of 105 minutes.
Burkina Faso, who lost their opening match to Turkey 0-1, poured
forward in attack and opened the scoring through Victor Nikiema in
the 12th minute.
Playing a high energy game, they rained a total of 28 shots on the
New Zealand goal, 10 of which were on target but found goalkeeper
Coey Turipa, who was also outstanding against Costa Rica, a hard
man to beat.
New Zealand, who surprised with a 1-1 draw in their opening match
against Costa Rica, were pinned in defence for most of the
match.
But from one of just two shots at the Burkina Faso goal, New
Zealand found the equaliser in the 57th minute through skipper
Gordon Murie, who scored after a freekick.
New Zealand are now second in Group D on two points and will play
group leaders Turkey on Sunday morning (NZtime).
A draw, depending on other results, or a win over Turkey will see
them advance to the second round.
