Jermain Defoe's five goals against Wigan in Tottenham's 9-1 win over the side on Monday has blasted him into the Premier League record books, but that is nothing compared to some as we look at the Top Ten: Single player goal hauls
1. Panagiotis Pontikos - Olympos Xylofagou v SEK Ayios Athanasios, 16 goals
Olympos Xylofagou striker Panagiotis Pontikos helped his side to a hefty 24-3 win over SEK Ayios Athanasios after banging in 16 goals in their third division clash in May 2007.
This incredible feat is worthy of a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the numbers of goals scored by a single player in a game, with goals timed at 3, 20, 33, 35, 47, 50, 55, 56, 58, 61, 68, 75, 76, 83, 86 and 87 minutes.
2. Stephan Staniso - Racing Club v Aubury, 16 goals
But unfortunately for Pontikos, this feat has to be shared with Stephan Staniso, who also scored 16 times for Racing Club in a French Cup match against Aubury Asturies in December 1942.
3. Archie Thompson - Australia v Western Samoa, 13 goals
In 2001, Archie Thompson scored 13 goals for Australia against a hapless American Samoa during the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at Coffs Harbour, Australia.
Unsurprisingly Australia went on to win the match, but at 31-0
it was the biggest scoreline in international football.
4. Joe Payne - Luton Town v Bristol Rovers, 10 goals
It has been 73 years since Joe Payne scored 10 goals in an English League game, but he still holds the competition record.
The win came when former Chelsea player Payne netted 10 goals in Luton's 12-0 win over Bristol Rovers in 1936.
5. Ted MacDougall - Boumemouth v Margate, 9 goals
With a nickname like SuperTed, it is no surprise that former Boumemouth striker Ted MacDougall grabbed a plethora of goals, the most coming in his side's 11-0 win over Margate in the first round of the FA Cup in 1971 where he smashed in nine.
In a career spanning 1967-80, which also included spells with Liverpool, Manchester United and West Ham, MacDougall scored 256 goals, placing him ahead of Nat Lofthouse, Ian Rush and Brian Clough in England's all-time list.
6. Ted Drake - Arsenal v Aston Villa, 7 goals
After joining Arsenal for a mere 6,500 pounds in 1934, Ted Drake went on to become one of Arsenal's most prolific scorers, netting 44 goals in all competitions, a club record he still holds to this day.
Drake also made a huge impact in 1935 when he scored seven goals against Aston Villa. Drake claimed that an eighth goal hit the crossbar and went over the line, but the ref waved away his appeal.
7 . Frankie Bunn - Oldham Athletic v Scarborough, 6
goals
Former Hull City and Oldham player Frankie Bunn's most famous playing moment came in October 1989 when he helped Oldham to a 7-0 win over Luton Town in the third round of the League Cup.
Bunn scored six of the seven goals which is still a record for the most goals for a single player in the tournament.
8. Andy Cole - Manchester United v Ipswich Town, 5 goals
Alex Ferguson's decision to pass up Stan Collymore in favour of Andy Cole in 1995 upset United fans, but they were made to eat their words over the former Newcastle hitman, because after a slow start to his Man United career, Cole came into form, netting goals every couple of games.
But one of his early and most memorable Old Trafford career highlights saw him become the first Premier League player to bang in five goals in one game - a feat he achieved during the Red Devils' 9-0 thrashing of Luton Town in 1995.
9. Alan Shearer - Newcastle United v Sheffield Wednesday, 5
goals
After becoming the most prolific goalscorer in the history of the Premier League, it is no surprise that Newcastle hero Alan Shearer shares the record for most goals scored in a Premier League game.
The 5-goal haul, which included two penalties, came for Shearer as Newcastle smashed relegation-troubled Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 in 1999.
10. Jermain Defoe - Tottenham Hotspurs v Wigan, 5 goals
Tottenham's 9-1 humiliation of Wigan in the Premier League on Monday is not only one of the tournament's biggest wins, but also sees Jermain Defoe join the likes of Shearer and Cole as the League's top scorers in a single game.
But Defoe actually gets one over his footballing counterparts, as he becomes the ONLY player to score five goals in the second half of a match, three of them coming in seven minutes.
