It may be a cliché to say that this year seems to be the most exciting Premier League season so far, but just seven games in, few draws and plenty of goals, it is certainly ringing true.

High scoring affairs like Arsenal's 6-1 drubbing of Everton, Tottenham's 5-nil thrashing of Burnley, Liverpool hitting Hull for six, and the high-scoring and equally controversial Manchester derby are also helping make the 09/10 season a record scorer for goals.

Equally amazing is the fact that although there have been 65 Premier League matches this season so far, you can actually count the number of draws on one hand because there have been just FOUR -14 less than during the same number of games last season.

According to British newspaper The Daily Mirror , there have been many reasons given for this current gushing of goals.

One is that the 37 goals banged in last weekend could have to do with the new Nike T90 Ascente football which is said to give the striker a 'greater shooting accuracy'

Another is the emergence of the more attack minded defender, like Liverpool's Glen Johnson, who scored two goals and provided two assists in four games, but who has also left the side fragile at the back leading to more goals being scored on either end of the pitch.

Other arguments suggest that smaller clubs, like Stoke and Sunderland, are throwing away their ten-men behind the ball tactics in favor of pushing forward, while it has also been suggested that questionable defense from the likes of Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal could also be the answer.

But one thing that is for certain is that although stats can provide the answer on a piece of paper, it is what is happening out there on the pitch that is making this season a force to be reckoned with

And it is for that reason that that La Liga can keep their Benzema's and Ibrahimovic's, while Serie A can hold onto their Eto'o's because the Premier League currently has some of the best strikers in the world.

These strikers are not only gifting their sides some incredible results, but are also giving the fans of this league a reason to fall in love with the beautiful game all over again - so with this in mind we count down the top five Premier League strikers of the 2009/10 season so far.

5. Jermain Defoe

With five goals in the Premier League thus-far Tottenham's Jermain Defoe comes in at number five in our top Premier League strikers.

Just two games into the new season, Defoe scored the 3rd hat-trick of his career in the sides 5-1 away victory over Hull, leading boss Harry Redknapp to declare that with Ronaldo out of the picture his diminutive striker could challenge for this seasons top scorer.

The best of Defoe's five goals though came just 38 minutes into Spurs clash with Manchester United at White Hart Lane when he performed a spectacular bicycle kick into the goal.

4. Emmanuel Adebayor

After a less than amicable release from Arsenal in the summer transfer season, Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor has made it his mission to show the Gunners just what they are missing.

Scoring four goals in four games, Adebayor got off to a flyer with his new club as he smashed home an 18-yard screamer on his City debut.

But the goals didn't stop there as he kept City alive with goals against Portsmouth and Wolves.

He also scored against his former team in City's 4-2 win at Eastland's and only a three match ban, handed to the Togo international after he controversially celebrating his goal in front of the traveling Gunners fansm has stopped this player from banging more in.

3. Dider Drogba

After stumbling under former Chelsea boss Luis Felipe Scolari, Didier Drogba was somewhat re-born under interim boss Guss Hiddink and has continue this form with new coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Unplayable at times, the fierce and physical Drogbe has netted six goals in seven games for the London side making him a definite contender for this year's Golden Boot.

Chelsea may have been undone by Wigan at the weekend, but it was a landmark game for Drogba whose equalizer saw him join the likes of Alan Shearer, Robbie Fowler and Frank Lampard in grabbing his 100th goal for the club.

But even though Chelsea where knocked off the top spot by United, it doesn't look like Drogba's goal scoring form will be derailed any time soon.

2. Wayne Rooney

After losing their most prolific goal scorer to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, United boss Alex Ferguson was heard to be asking questions of striker Wayne Rooney, and luckily for him, the strong Liverpool lad answered him with goals.

A tireless workhorse that never gives up, Wayne Rooney has been in flying form for home and country since the new season started.

Having already scored six goals in seven games, Rooney is already well on his way to beating his personal best of 23 goals in the 06/07 season.

And while he wows fans with his space-finding ability and banging finishes, this soon to be daddy is also starting to let his feet, rather than his mouth (or fists in some corner flag incidents) do the talking, leading him to increasingly become know as the Golden Boy of Old Trafford.

1. Fernando Torres

It is no secret that Liverpool star Fernando Torres is arguably one of the best strikers in the world.

Since coming to Anfield in 2007 not only has Torres scored 46 goals in 64 appearances for the club, but the former Atletico Madrid striker also scored the winning goal to help Spain win their first European Championship since1964 (leading even some Real Madrid fans to hail him a hero).

And at this present time it is also no secret that an on-fire Fernando Torres is arguably in the form of his life.

He has scoring 8 goals in seven games for Liverpool, the latest coming with his all too easy hat-trick over Phil Browns tired Tigers, there is no doubt that Torres is one silent assassin that most defenders dread marking.

There is an old saying that goes 'Woman want him, Men want to be him'; which couldn't be more true of Fernando Torres right now.
