Wellington Phoenix midfielder Daniel has been ruled out of the club's New Year's eve A-League football match against the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford.

The Brazilian aggravated a groin strain at training on Monday and will be replaced in the starting eleven by former Mariners player Adrian Caceres.

Defender Manny Muscat is back from his three-week suspension and will travel with the squad, but Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert says he'll have a different role.

Herbert says Troy Hearfield will remain at right back and he's considering playing Muscat in a holding midfield role.

He says they want to get Tim Brown and Vince Lia further forward as they've been getting in good goal-scoring positions of late.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix have parted company with Chinese striker Jiang Chen.
