Jose Mourinho will only consider becoming the next Liverpool boss if current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks are stripped of power.

According to reports in the News of the World, current Inter Milan boss Mourinho is interested in taking the helm at Liverpool this summer but he will not consider taking over from current under-fire Red's boss Rafa Benitez if the American owners are still at the club.

Firing up the Merseysiders, who have slumped to their worst season in decades, is reported to hold some appeal for the former Chelsea boss, but he knows he would need the resources to bring success back to the ailing club.

Cashed-up Manchester City and Real Madrid are also targeting the 47-year-old, which could prove problematic for Liverpool whose latest loss to Manchester United has all but ended their top-four Champions League qualification hopes.

The club, who need a major cash injection to pay off their current debuts, will know in the next two weeks if a much needed 100 million pound boost from the New York based Rhone Group will go ahead meaning the American owners would take more of a back seat at the club and Mourinho could come to Anfield.
