Tottenham defender Ledley King has returned to the UK after withdrawing from the England squad for Sunday's (NZT) friendly against Slovakia and next week's World Cup qualifier against the Ukraine.

King's surprise call-up to the squad was described as "mad" by Spurs manager Harry Redknapp as the 28-year-old defender is unable to train with the squad and can play only one game per week because of a chronic knee injury.

"It has been agreed by both parties that the best interests of the player are served by continuing his individual training programme at the club and he will play no further part in England's preparations," the FA said.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, has praised the defender, telling reporters:

"Ability-wise Ledley King is certainly good enough to be in a World Cup squad," said Gerrard.

"We're keeping our fingers crossed that when the World Cup squad is picked he is fit and available for selection."

Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch is also in doubt for the Slovakia clash as he was forced to leave training to have a calf scan and Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips also sat out training with a back injury - although it is thought not to be serious.
