As it happened: Argentina v Belgium

Published: 3:22AM Sunday July 06, 2014 Source: ONE News

Argentina played Belgium in the quarterfinals at the 2014 FIFA World Cup at Estádio Nacional de Brasilia, Brasília.

FULLTIME: Argentina 1-0 Belgium

Argentina will player either the Netherlands or Costa Rica in the semifinals.

90mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Five minutes of added time.

83mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Argentina are coasting to victory here. Belgium, seemingly having learned nothing from the spirit that the USA showed against them, are not doing much about it.

81mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Argentina substitution: Higuain off after his best game of the tournament, Gago on.

74mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Belgium substitution: Hazard off, Nacer Chadli on.

70mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Argentina substitution: Palacio on, Lavezzi off.

64mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Slightly better by Belgium. Hazard delivers an in-swinging cross from the left and Fellaini outjumps Garay but heads wide.

59mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Who do Belgium call on in a situation like this? Romelu Lukaku. He's on for Origi.

53mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

It's been all Argentina so far. Lavezzi flashes a super ball across the face of goal. But Higuain can't quite reach it.

46mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Argentina get us going again. No changes to report.

HAFLTIME: Argentina 1-0 Belgium

Gonzalo Higuain scored his first goal of this World Cup to give Argentina a 1-0 halftime lead.

Higuain fired home Angel Di Maria's deflected pass just inside the area in the eighth minute, beating Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a low shot to the far corner of the net.

Belgium took over possession after the goal but couldn't find a way past the Argentina's defensive line, bolstered by central midfielders Javier Mascherano and Lucas Biglia.

Argentina substituted Angel Di Maria with Enzo Perez in the 33rd. The winger appeared to hurt his right leg while taking a shot five minutes earlier.

Argentina and Belgium hadn't met in the World Cup since the former won their semifinal match 2-0 in 1986.

45mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Two minutes of added time.

40mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

A free-kick to Argentina in dangerous position. Messi weaves between a few defenders before being taken down just outside the box. Don't worry he's OK. He gets up to take the kick but blasts it high and wide of the top right corner.

32mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Here's a blow for Argentina and also, perhaps, to the entertainment prospects: Di Maria is limping off, seemingly with a hamstring strain, and is replaced by Perez, a sturdy midfielder with far less flair.

22mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Argentina are still showing plenty of ambition as Higuain almost creates another goal-scoring chance. Belgium are showing ambition too, but they haven't found a way of converting that into a serious problem for their opponents.

17mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

Promising for Belgium! After patient probing, they worked the ball wide to Vertonghen, who scampered past his man and fired in a vicious cross. Argentina are forced to concede a corner. The delivery is better this time but Van Buyten's ensuing header goes high over the bar.

8mins - ARG 1-0 BEL

GOAL! Gonzalo Higuain gets a lucky ricochet just inside the area. He lets rip, firing from right to left as Thibaut Courtois can do nothing but watch it rocket inside the left post.

3mins - ARG 0-0 BEL

A bit of a surprise I suppose. Belgium look purposeful and energetic. Play hasn't got out of the middle third yet but there's a bold feel to the game.

1min - And they're off.

3:57am - After both captains read out FIFA's anti-racism messages in their native tongue, the anthems are sung and we're now awaiting kick-off.

3:17am - Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella has made three changes to his lineup for the World Cup quarterfinal against Belgium.

In addition to Jose Basanta replacing suspended left back Marcos Rojo, Martin Demichelis is making his first appearance in the tournament, taking Federico Fernandez's spot in central defense.

Lucas Biglia is playing in midfield instead of Fernando Gago, who hasn't impressed in previous games.

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots decided to play right back Toby Alderweireld, who had been troubled by a thigh strain, opting not to replace him with the untested Laurent Ciman.

Up front, he replaced Dries Mertens with Kevin Mirallas and stuck with teenage center forward Divock Origi at the expense of Romelu Lukaku.

Pre match

Lionel Messi will look to take another step to the World Cup final later today, but which Belgium players can stop him?

Lionel Messi, in this game, as in any other that he plays, holds the key. Messi is the only player on the pitch with the capabilities of winning this football game alone.

Messi has carried Argentina up to this point, and I strongly believe that he is going to carry Argentina the whole way to winning the World Cup. Expect the lightning quick drop of a shoulder, and before you know it Messi will have scored a trademark goal.

TEAMS:

Argentina: Sergio Romero; Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis, Ezequiel Garay, Jose Basanta; Lucas Biglia, Javier Mascherano, Angel Di Maria; Ezequiel Lavezzi, Gonzalo Higuain, Lionel Messi.

Belgium: Thibaut Courtois; Toby Alderweireld, Daniel Van Buyten, Vincent Kompany, Jan Vertonghen; Axel Witsel, Marouane Fellaini, Kevin De Bruyne; Kevin Mirallas, Divock Origi, Eden Hazard.
