A second narrow loss this morning has ended the Football Ferns' dream of advancing to the quarter-finals of the women's World Cup.

New Zealand gave up a 1-0 halftime lead to lose 2-1 to England in their second group match in Dresden.

Football Ferns coach John Herdman said he has mixed emotions.

Herdman said he is proud of the girls for the effort they put in, but he's gutted they don't have a future in this world cup.

The Football Ferns remain bottom of their group, while Japan has secured a place in the last eight after thrashing Mexico 4-0.

New Zealand face Mexico in their final group match on Wednesday morning.
