Rafa Benitez's men are looking to bounce back against the current League leaders fresh from their sixth defeat in all competitions.

Their latest was a 2-1 defeat at the hand of French champions Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday, giving the club their worst start to a season since 1987.

But defender Jamie Carragher, who took over the captain's armband when Steven Gerrard limped off in the first half, has warned their bitter rivals that beating them could be just the boost the crisis-hit club needs.

"Beating United could be just the boost we need. We always bounce back because that's what we are about." Carragher said.

"We've got a lot of fight and character and will want to show that against United, particularly after what happened against Lyon.

"We're going through a tough patch but we've been through them before and we'll bounce back, there's no doubt about that.

"It's always a great game against United, and that could be what we need. If we win, it'll give everyone a massive lift."

Young defender Martin Kelly, who impressed on his full debut as a replacement for Glen Johnson before going off with an ankle injury, also hopes to get a chance against Alex Ferguson's men.

"I was pleased with my debut, but everyone was disappointed about the result." The 19-year-old said.

"Now we just have to look forward to Sunday's game with Manchester United and try to put things right."

But as it currently stands things are not looking good for under-fire Rafa Benitez's men.

Influential skipper Steven Gerrard is still an injury concern, as is star striker Fernando Torres and England international Glen Johnson, who are all nursing groin injuries.

Winger Albert Riera is also in doubt and needs a scan on a hamstring injury.
