FIFA president Sepp Blatter has broken his silence over France captain Thierry Henry's controversial handball in the World Cup qualifier against Ireland.
L'Equipe newspaper says Blatter phoned Henry following the match to offer his support.
"(Henry) was honest by admitting that he did use his hand, but it wasn't his responsibility to tell the referee," the paper quotes Blatter as saying.
Blatter also said that "the referee should have taken the time to reflect rather than immediately awarding the goal".
Henry has been under fire since handling the ball in the build-up to William Gallas's equaliser that gave France a 1-1 draw and a 2-1 aggregate win.
