David Bentley, who scored a stunning goal against his old club Arsenal last season, will start his first league game of the season against them on Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp said on Saturday.

Bentley's long-range strike, his only league goal of the season, helped Spurs to a 4-4 draw at the Emirates a year ago but, with Aaron Lennon generally taking on the right midfield role, he has gradually fallen out of favour since.

The former England midfielder has had only five minutes of action in the league this season but was impressive in Spurs' 2-0 win over Everton in the League Cup on Wednesday and, with Lennon missing on Sunday through injury, retains his place.

"He showed on (Wednesday) night he has got so much ability and it's such a waste if he doesn't put that into his performances," Redknapp told reporters at the club's training ground.

"He was outstanding on (Wednesday). We need David Bentley playing well because when he's playing well he's a real asset to the club.

"Now we need a run of performances like that from him. He will play tomorrow, he'll go back there and play.

"He's looking forward to going back to Arsenal again where he started out so it's a big game for him. He scored a great goal last year and I'm sure he'd like to score another good goal tomorrow. He looks in the right frame of mind and he looks very sharp."
