Barcelona want to make Man United ace Wayne Rooney the world's most expensive footballer.

According to British newspaper, The News of the World, the 2009 La Liga and Champions League winners are lining up an incredible 85 million pound summer swoop for the striker.

It is being reported that the Spanish giants have identified the 24-year-old as a major transfer target with a bid that would even top what Barca rivals Real Madrid paid for Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.

The Catalan side are said to believe United's increasing debt mean they current Premier League champions are under pressure to consider bids for all their top stars, and United's failure to pump the funds from Ronaldo's 80 million pound sale back into Ferguson's squad, despite some less-than-impressive performances at the beginning of the season, is proof the club's finances are in a mess.

But as was the case with Ronaldo, it is thought it would be up to Rooney himself if he wanted to make the Spanish switch.

And although the new dad has never expressed a desire to play in Europe, it is thought Barca's bid, and the chance to play with Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta will leave him wondering where his future lies.
